If you are experiencing any bloating after eating or relying on antacids or Tagamet after meals, it’s definitely time to heal your digestive system. These drugs only cover up the symptoms and chronic, long term inflammation can be a precursor to cancer so now is the time to get your digestion on track!
Here are some basic tips for healthy digestion.
1. Eat in a relaxed way in a pleasant setting, and take your time. Chew your food until it is liquid. This is most important thing you can do to take stress off of your stomach. If you are under emotional pressure or in a hurry, now is not the time to eat. Wait until you calm down or eat only simple food such as fresh fruit or vegetable juice, a piece of fruit or yogurt. Examine your own relationship with food and learn how to become a conscious eater by reading Mark Bittman’s new book, “Food Matters”.

Every organ in your digestive system--mouth, tongue, throat, esophagus, pyloric valve, stomach, intestines, glands, pancreas and others—needs a healthy nerve supply from your spine. Our patients regularly share how their digestion and elimination has improved while under care.
3. Walking is great for digestion. If you want to do any type of strenuous exercise, wait at least two hours after eating but a regular walk around the neighborhood after dinner is a great routine to cultivate.
4. Drink enough water (6 to 8 cups a day) in between meals. Try starting your day with a half a lemon in a large glass of water to get your bowels moving—you’ll be surprised how great it works and you’ll be hooked on this sugarless lemonade!
5. Get enough fiber in your diet, whether from vegetables and fruits, bran or psyllium, and an adequate amount of whole grains, fresh sprouts, and cooked legumes.
