Dr. Kathleen Sherwood and the rest of the SCC staff are involved with each of our patients in a meaningful way and focus on the whole patient. We provide effective, meaningful lifestyle recommendations from the first day of care as part of our commitment to patient care. Thorough, hands-on consult and exam process, encouraging/expectation of patient participation in the process from the start, providing meaningful exam findings and a written plan of action so that the patient can begin getting results right away is our mission.
This is a part of each patient’s care plan and there are no add-on charges for these services—it’s all a part of becoming a patient at SCC. Emphasis on whole food eating with the purpose of lowering inflammation, encouraging an active, dynamic lifestyle empowering patients to take charge of their own health. Emphasis on low tech, effective and doable exercises to add more movement to each day at work or at home. See what sets us apart from other chiropractors in Atlanta by reading below!
Are you interested in finding out if seeing a chiropractor in Atlanta can help you? Dr. Sherwood offers this opportunity to find out if we are able to help you with your health concerns. This free consultation is useful for someone who is thinking about seeing a chiropractor, but is still not sure. We understand that this is a big decision for some and that many patients have had disappointments finding solutions elsewhere.
Dr. Sherwood will do a brief review of your health history, ask you questions and perform some brief tests to find out if she thinks you are a candidate for chiropractic care. We are results driven and will take on your case only if we feel confident that you we can help you. Our goal is to exceed your expectations on this visit and we encourage you to ask questions. Typically the consultation takes 15-20 minutes and at the conclusion you will have more understanding if chiropractic can benefit you!
After your consultation, Dr. Sherwood or our associate doctor will palpate your spine checking for misalignments called subluxations, including palpation of the surrounding muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons involved in your area of concern. Additionally we will thoroughly examine other areas of your spine that could also be contributing or causing the problem.
As part of your exam, we will conduct a full orthopedic and neurological exam including range of motion tests to determine the cause, asking for feedback. We encourage your participation in your care from the start so be ready to ask questions!
Like it or not, our posture is our “calling card” and effects the way that others see us. Additionally, poor posture can adversely affect your health and bad posture correlates to over 200 serious health conditions.
You will be provided with a digitalized posture analysis on your 2nd visit so that you can see, first-hand, how your posture may be deviating from your potential for optimal posture and the correlation with your pain or other symptoms.
On your 2nd visit you will be provided with recommendations for correcting your posture imbalances and an at home exercise program will be provided as part of your care plan.
Sherwood Chiropractic Center provides onsite x-rays for your convenience, if clinically necessary, as well as analysis of all exam findings which will be presented on your Report of Findings, on your 2nd day.
Dr. Sherwood is committed to sharing the very best, no-nonsense, practical nutrition and lifestyle recommendations with each patient as part of their care. She has been studying nutrition and whole-food based supplementation for over 30 years and is a converted “Pegan” or Paleo-vegan after researching the benefits of micro and macro-nutrients found only in animal based foods as well as consuming organic vegetables and some fruit.
Her current belief is that it is very difficult to have proper cognitive/nervous system health, as well as optimal joint and musculoskeletal health by consuming solely a plant-based diet. Regardless of your current philosophies around food, there is always room for improvement and Dr. Sherwood is passionate about identifying the baby steps each patient can take to reach their nutrition goals. We share Lifestyle Focus Modules with our patients each month as well as life-changing recipes that have been developed by Dr. Sherwood and other local practitioners that we work with.
In 2015, we added our new Patient Playground which is a separate rehab room available for all patients, at any fitness level, who choose a posture correction plan, at no extra charge. We will demonstrate exercises that patients can perform and home, in the gym or at the workplace and you can perform the exercise at each visit. Handouts are provided for each of the exercises and flexibility/self-massage tools are demonstrated and provided. Patients are encouraged to use our rehab room, typically under supervision, before each chiropractic adjustment. We find that when patients warm up with stretches and exercises beforehand, we typically get a deeper adjustment than otherwise. The overall focus is that you will take the exercise/flexibility instruction home and do them a minimum of 4x’s per week for best results. (You can do it.) We are committed to teaching out patients that LIFE is movement and movement is LIFE, and how to get essential, transformative movement each day!
Dr. Sherwood has over 20 years of adjusting thousands of patients. She varies her hands-on technique to the patient but most patients comment that they feel thoroughness in the adjustment style that they appreciate. We use Lloyd McManus tables each visit that allow us to adjust our patients while the table is moving, providing a unique experience. Our youngest patients have been a few days old and we serve many seniors including a 104 year old patient. Everyone with a spine deserves chiropractic! Every staff member in the practice, including Dr. Sherwood gets adjusted on a regular, at least once-per-week basis. Techniques include: Full-spine, Thompson Drop, Flexion-Distraction, Sacral Occipital Technique, Activator, Pettibon Posture Protocols, Trigger Point/Myofascial Stretching and Extremity Adjusting.
Spinal decompression therapy is used to treat bulging/herniated discs, and facet syndrome throughout the spine. This is a non-surgical, comfortable traction therapy for the relief of back and leg pain. During this procedure, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it which can pull back the protruded disc material. Also, the vacuum within the disc can secondarily stimulate a healing response. This results in pain reduction and proper healing at the injured site. SCC is committed to helping patients with lasting lumbar pain live full lives and offers affordable options to patients who are trying to avoid lumbar surgeries.
SCC conducts complimentary workshops twice monthly so that staff can interact with our patients in a group setting. We show a brief video to help our patients further their understanding of chiropractic, showcase our current lifestyle module and then we get down on the mat and work on flexibility and balance/coordination exercises using the foam roller, yoga balls and other fun, low-tech exercise devices. The purpose of the workshop is to learn new ways of improving fitness and flexibility, have the opportunity to pick our brains about anything health related, as well as to make new friends from the community. We also enjoy taking our workshops to the work environment so let us know about opportunities at your workplace.
We regularly hear from patients how much they enjoy interacting with our professional but engaged and friendly staff. Each staff member at SCC strives to live the same lifestyle that we share with our patients. We each get adjusted regularly within the practice, eat a whole-food based, anti-inflammatory diet and do our very best to exercise several times per week. We know it’s not easy to put yourself first with all the commitments and demands of work and home but it is doable. When we take better care of ourselves, everything in our lives falls into place and we can let the daily challenges just pass on by!
